Glass Tile Installation Guidelines

Glass Tile Installation Guidelines

Bicycle Glass Tile is created using recycled glass - a byproduct of the window industry - that was originally destined for the landfill. Due to the unique properties of glass compared to ceramic, careful installation is crucial for a successful and long-lasting application. Installation should be performed by experienced tile professionals familiar with the unique handling and setting requirements of glass tile

⚠️ Note: Bicycle Glass Tile is not designed for flooring or fully submerged installations (e.g., pools, fountains or shower floors).

Installation Guidelines

Safety Recommendations

  • Always wear eye protection and anti-cut gloves
  • Ensure your workspace is well-lit and safety-conscious
  • Installation should be done by professionals who have experience working with glass tile

Substrate Preparation

  • Only install over well-cured, stable substrates
  • A crack isolation membrane is strongly recommended across the entire surface
  • Walls for glass installation should be plumb and square

Cutting Tools

  • Wet saw with a glass-specific blade and/or hand scoring tools
  • Use diamond-tipped drill bits or glass-specific coring bits for drilling
  • Use plenty of water or lubricant to cool the glass and blade

Grout Recommendations

  • Non-sanded urethane grout is preferred
  • Cement and epoxy grouts may be used if approved by manufacturer (test first)
  • Avoid sanded grout, which may scratch glass (test first)
  • Use Grout Release on matte finishes (test first)
  • Maintain minimum 1/16" grout joints between glass pieces
  • Remove grout haze immediately after application
  • Glass expands/contracts more than other tile materials, use movement accommodation joints in areas exposed to temperature shifts

Sealing Recommendations

  • Grout should be sealed after installation to prevent water intrusion and staining
  • The tiles themselves do not require sealing, as Bicycle Glass Tile is impervious

Care & Maintenance

  • Use non-abrasive glass cleaners and avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals
  • Handle carefully to prevent surface scratching
