Kim and Wayne's Island Coastal Contemporary Home Refresh

Vision for the Space

When Kim and Wayne set out to refresh their home of 25 years, they aimed to create a timeless, breezy style that Kim dubbed “Island Coastal Contemporary.” The renovation included a kitchen makeover along with updates to lighting, paint, and window coverings. After eight weeks, their home emerged with a renewed, airy feel that brought the coast right into their living space.

A Blend of Style and Sentiment

Kim and Wayne wanted a style that was both relaxed and modern, bringing in the airy feel of the coast with clean, simple lines. To capture this, they chose light, natural tones and textures to give the space a calming, open feel. When they discovered Bicycle Glass Co.'s lighting, they were instantly reminded of Japanese glass fishing floats, which evoked memories of their childhoods. Both had relatives who used these floats as decor—Kim’s grandfather hung them in his beach cottage, and Wayne’s uncle displayed them on his patio. The lights became a special touch, resulting in a stylish coastal retreat filled with personal history.

How Lighting Brought It Together

Lighting played a key role in bringing Kim’s coastal vision to life. Both she and her husband grew up near the ocean—Kim in Southern California and Wayne in Hawaii—so they wanted lighting that evoked fond memories of the beach. They found exactly what they needed with Bicycle Glass Co.'s pendants: modern, yet organic, with a touch of that coastal charm. The pendants, paired with vintage-style bulbs, gave the room a warm, welcoming glow.

Tips for Fellow Renovators

Here are a few tips from Wayne and Kim’s experience:

  1. Get Everything Ready: They recommend having all materials on-site before beginning. A delay in their countertop arrival meant they were without a working kitchen longer than expected, so planning ahead is crucial.
  2. Stay Nearby, if Possible: To avoid the paint fumes and construction noise, they stayed at a nearby condo, which allowed them to check on the project while keeping their distance.
  3. Communicate with All Trades: Wayne and Kim suggest discussing project details with each trade individually, not just the general contractor. This helped them avoid surprises and kept everything on track.
  4. Prepare for Dust: With so much traffic in and out of the house, dust quickly became an issue. They recommend scheduling a professional clean once the project wraps up.
