Transforming a 1980s House into a Timeless Home: Aaron and Karalynn's Remodel Journey

In 2023, Aaron M. (@brzride) and Karalyn B. (@kbuchner22) took on the challenge of updating a stuck-in-time 1980s house. Teaming up with a general contractor, they tackled much of the design themselves.

The old layout of the 1980s house didn't cut it for Aaron and Karalyn. "Functionality and flow were a priority," they emphasized, aiming to infuse a cozy yet durable vibe with rustic influences.

Here's what they had to say about their renovation journey, starting with their lighting choices:

Lighting Matters

"We came across Bicycle Glass early in our renovation planning. We knew that we wanted a unique and different accent over the kitchen island. At nearly 9 feet long, the island was going to need a sufficiently disbursed lighting strategy. While originally considering a linear chandelier or individual pendants, we were challenged by how to layout such options with an existing skylight over one end of the island. The pendant cascade chandelier design was the perfect solution. We were able to add plenty of light over a highly used large work space and not crowd the existing skylight.”

Karalyn and Aaron aimed for a timeless aesthetic, opting for a neutral palette for permanent fixtures. This allows for future flexibility to inject more color and personality through accessories and furniture.

“Somewhat on a whim, we also ordered the Bicycle Glass 2-Light Wall Vanity lights to go over the mirrors in the primary bathroom. We chose a different globe shape and finish but the same glass color, which provides a common element between the two "new" spaces at each end of our home.."

Personal Insights from Karalyn and Aaron

"We are proud of the fact that we made the design choices ourselves. In doing so, we truly have made the home "ours" now. The choices related to the kitchen were probably the most stressful but we could not be happier."

Their advice to fellow renovators? "Trust your instincts but don't hesitate to seek help where needed. Stay mindful of your budget and prioritize quality. When it's all said and done, you'll love the result!"
