A Nature-Inspired Addition to a Kansas City Ranch

A Nature-Inspired Addition to a Kansas City Ranch

Design Feature: A Nature-Inspired Addition to a Kansas City Ranch

Some renovations are about refreshing what's already there. This one was about honoring it, and then building something extraordinary alongside it. When Julianne M. purchased a 1950s ranch in the Greater Kansas City area, she saw it's potential. Over 1,000 square feet later, the home now includes a new dining room, kitchen, pantry and prep kitchen, and a beverage center area,  all designed to grow with her family's lifestyle without losing the character of the original architecture.

A Vision Rooted in Nature

The entire design started with a single piece of wallpaper. That one piece of inspiration became the anchor for every color, finish, and material decision in the new space. The goal was to create something nature-inspired and welcoming while honoring the home's 1950s bones. It was a balancing act between old and new, and one she pulled off beautifully.

The Role of Lighting

Once the vision was established, lighting became one of the most intentional decisions of the project. After discovering that Bicycle Glass Co., the choice was made."It was the jewelry for my vision come to life," she shared.

That word jewelry says everything. These weren't fixtures chosen to simply light a room. They were chosen to complete it.

A Style Built to Last

Rather than chasing a moment in design, she set out to build something timeless, and choosing Bicycle Glass was part of that. For her, sustainability and American-made craftsmanship aren't trends; they're values her parents modeled her whole life. Layers of texture, color, and style give the space a personality that's distinctly hers, while leaving room to evolve.

Advice for Future Renovators

Unlike renovation shows on television, there were no large surprises here. Just good bones, talented tradespeople, and a homeowner on-site every day to keep her vision front and center. Her advice is simple:

"Hire professionals that are committed to your vision, share your goals, and discuss all the details. While living in the home during the six-month renovation had challenges, it also allowed me to be onsite to answer questions and touch base every day."
