Handmade Glass Lighting: Finding Beauty in the Differences

Wabi-Sabi: Beauty in the Differences

When you’re choosing lighting, it’s easy to expect every piece to look exactly the same.

With handmade glass, that’s not how it works, and at Bicycle Glass Co., it’s not what we aim for.

Each of our lights is made from 100% recycled glass, shaped by hand in our Minnesota studio. Our glass, made from locally sourced recycled bottles and jars, has natural variations and inclusions that give it character. No two pieces are exactly the same, and that’s what makes them beautiful.

Not imperfections, just the natural result of something being made by hand.

There’s a concept for this: wabi-sabi: an appreciation for beauty in things that are natural, imperfect, and unique.

What Wabi-Sabi Looks Like in Glass

Wabi-sabi isn’t about making something look imperfect on purpose.

It’s about allowing the process and the material to show through.

In handmade glass, that means:
  • Allowing textures to move slightly from piece to piece
  • Accepting that no two shapes will land in exactly the same way
  • Letting natural inclusions become part of the finished piece
Instead of chasing uniformity, we lean into what the glass wants to do.

Where You’ll See the Differences

Variation in handmade glass shows up in specific, intentional ways depending on the style.

Lunar (seeded glass)
Each piece has its own pattern of bubbles, some more clustered, some more open; some larger and some smaller.

Swell (wave texture)
The movement of the wave varies slightly from piece to piece. You may notice small differences in the height or rhythm of the waves.

Spun (wrapped glass)
The applied glass trails are placed by hand, so each wrap lands a little differently.
Some pieces may also feature cords: lines that appear on the surface of the glass and can look a bit like topographic contour lines.

These aren’t inconsistencies, they’re the result of real-time, hands-on work.

Why It Feels Better in Your Home

Perfectly identical lighting can feel flat, subtle variation adds:

Depth: light interacts differently across textures and bubbles

Movement: your eye catches small differences over time

Warmth: your space feels more lived-in, less manufactured

Especially in groupings, these differences create a more natural, collected look.

Handmade in Minnesota

Every Bicycle Glass piece is made in our Minnesota studio by a small team of makers.

We use recycled glass not just for sustainability, but because of the character it brings to the final piece. Each light reflects both the material it came from and the hands that shaped it.

The Takeaway

Wabi-sabi reminds us that beauty doesn’t come from everything being the same.

It comes from variation, from process, and from materials being allowed to be what they are.

If you’re drawn to pieces with texture, movement, and a real connection to how they’re made, that’s exactly where it stands apart.
