A Fall Update From Our Rooftop Bees

Honey harvesting has officially begun at Bicycle Glass Co.!

We recently removed one super—the upper section where bees store extra honey—from our rooftop hive. Some of the cells are still uncapped, which can mean the honey contains too much moisture to harvest safely. What we have collected, however, is wonderfully thick.

Spinning and Extracting

To harvest the honey, we perforate the wax covering and place the frames in an extractor, which spins the honey out of the comb. So far, we’ve collected about 1.5 gallons!

Preparing for Winter

The hives will remain on the studio roof for now as the bees make the most of the final warm days. As the weather cools, they’ll gather closely inside the hive and rely on stored honey for energy throughout the winter.

It’s been exciting to see what our small rooftop neighbors have created this season. We’ll continue checking on the remaining honey and making sure the bees are ready for the colder months ahead.
